The Hotel Riviera in Seoul, South Korea was the site of the purse bid for the WBA "regular" cruiserweight title fight between former champ Virgil Hill and Valery Brudov. Fans may remember that this fight was already to have taken place in St. Louis, but was scrapped by promoter Don King. This time, the purse bid almost didn't take place at all as tempers flared, accusations flew, and tensions rose. In the end, a resolution was found, with mixed reactions. Three bidders were in the mix: Don King Promotions -- represented by Bobby Goodman, AMI Productions -- Michele Acaries and Toquop Productions -- represented by Virgil Hill himself. As the bidding process ensued, Hill's bid was announced at $241,000. The only problem was that the bids of Don King and AMI hadn't been given to the purse bid chairman yet. Hill noticed this and spoke up, citing the unfair advantage of having his bid read aloud, while the other bids weren't handed in yet. Arguments ensued, and a quick meeting was held among the members of the committee, including WBA legal representative Bob Mack. The bids of both Don King and AMI were taken in sealed envelopes, reviewed and read. They were as follows: Don King productions: $260,000, AMI $281,000, with Toquop Productions' original bid of $241,000 still intact. The decision was made to disqualify AMI from the bidding process and deny their bid due to the fact that the committee could not determine whether or not Acaries had filled out his bid after hearing Toquop's bid read aloud. The committee also invalidated Don King Productions' bid because the check was not certified. Hill's low bid thus became the only valid bid and the winning bid! The denial of both AMI's and Don King Productions' bids can be appealed.
