In a WBA cruiserweight title eliminator Jones scored a controversial fourth round stoppage win against former WBC cruiserweight king Wayne Braithwaite. Jones controlled the opening round by out-punching the naturally bigger Braithwaite with solid right hands. Jones was not as effective in the second round as Braithwaite increased the pace to finish strongly and also adopted the same tactics to win the third session. Jones was on the wrong end of a barrage of punches in fourth round until he recovered. Jones backed Braithwaite into the ropes and unloaded with big right hands. Not all the punches appeared to connect but Braithwaite did fire back and the referee stepped in after 2:26 of the round to save the Brooklyn based African from receiving more punishment. Jones improved to, 33-3-2-(26), while Braithwaite falls to 21-2-(17). It was the second consecutive defeat for Braithwaite, who bitterly protested at the stoppage and immediately challenged Jones to a rematch.
The second upset of this Don King promoted card saw heavyweight Ray Austin score a 12 round split decision win over the favoured Owen Beck. The 34 year-old from Cleveland triumphed on two of the judges cards by 117-111 and 115-113 while the third official had Bell in front 115-113. Austin was the naturally bigger and stronger of the two and used this to his full advantage. Beck started the bout confidently and enjoyed early success but Austin gradually wore the smaller man down after the sixth round and had Bell in serious trouble in the 11th round. Beck fell to 24-2-(18), while the rejuvenated Austin improved to 23-3-3-(15). Austin won the vacant USNBC Heavyweight Title.
