Crude Colombian slugger Carlos Maussa stunned Vivian Harris at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Saturday night to win the WBA junior-welterweight weight title.
In one of the worst genuine world title fights, in terms of quality for many years, Maussa stunned the out of shape 27 year-old champion with a cracking left hook to floor him for the full count after 43 seconds of the seventh round.
The opening round saw both men start fast but even at that early stage the lack of quality was evident for all to see. Harris was the better fighter, technically but only marginally as both swung wildly like novices in the very early stage of their careers.
Harris struggled early in the second round as Maussa marched forward to unsettle the champion. But the best action of the round belonged to Harris, who caught Maussa flush with two cracking left hooks to the chin. Thats where the quality punches stopped though as Harris quickly ran out of steam and the pace of the fight slowed dramatically as neither man appeared to want to engineer the pace. If the truth be known, though, neither man was capable of stepping up to stamp their authority on the fight.
Harris was so spent by the end of the fifth round that he chose to stand in his corner as trainer Emanuel Steward tried to inject some much needed urgency into his work. But it was not to be. Harris looked so tired by the end of the sixth round the expression on his face looked that of man who wanted to be anywhere rather than defending against Maussa. Then came the left hook that finished the job early in the seventh round.
Maybe Harris was looking beyond Maussa and dreaming of a unification fight against either Arturo Gatti or Floyd Mayweather, who fought in the main event. If he was then he did so at his peril. The fact is Harris failed to prepare and he paid the price.
Ivan Calderon retained his WBO minimumweight title for the sixth time at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey with a unanimous 12 round verdict over 20 year-old Mexican Gerardo Verde on Saturday night.
Two of the three all female judges scored the bout 117-111 while the third saw the bout closer at 115-113. The Puerto Rican southpaw proved just too fast and experienced for Verde in the first part of the fight but as the 30 year-old champion began to tire Verde caught up with his slippery tormenter, connecting with some heavy body shots.

Mayweather tortures Gatti!
