Mayweather tortures Gatti!

26 Jun 2005 10:43       hits 35807 Print version

Undefeated Floyd Mayweather seized the WBC super lightweight title by stopping Arturo "Thunder" Gatti at the end of round six after a dominating, virtuoso performance Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Mayweather (34-0, 23 KOs) floored Gatti in round one while Gatti was distracted expecting referee Earl Morton to step in. Floyd's hand speed allowed him to pick apart Gatti at will with hard shots. Gatti's left eye was swelling badly by round three. Round four was completely one-sided as Gatti (38-7, 29 KOs) continued to absorb punishment. The beating continued in rounds five and six, after which Gatti's corner stopped the bout. After the fight, Gatti said he would likely return at 147.

"I think it was a good fight and I was the better man tonight," stated newly crowned, three-time WBC champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. Saturday at the post-fight press conference in Atlantic City following his demolition of Arturo Gatti. "I don't hate Arturo Gatti," said Floyd. "He gave it his all. I respect him as a fighter." As to his future plans, Mayweather stated "In the future, I will have to do it in New York. Me and Ricky Hatton.

In a brief appearance, Gatti said, "He was just a quicker fighter than I thought he was. I'm 32 years old, it's not the first time I took a beating. I want to come back at 147."

Mayweather: "Gatti doesn't want to see me before the fight"

The next reporter asked if Mayweather feels slighted when everyone talks about Gatti’s heart and iron will, while they only celebrate Mayweather’s physical ability. “Well, sometimes I wonder. You know, I’ve fought with hurt hands. I’ve finished nine rounds like that. I have proved myself – that I am willing to fight. Mayweather: "Lightning strikes but thunder only makes noise"

- Is this the biggest fight of your career so far? Floyd Mayweather: "On paper, yeah. But he ain't on the level of a Jose Luis Castillo or Diego Corrales. Is he better? I don't think so. You gotta realize how this guy has become a "world" champion. You gotta remember that he got that belt because they stripped Kostya Tszyu of the belt and let him (Gatti) fight for a vacant title. Gatti: I'm going to shock the world!

First off he apologized for missing the original presser due to a "stomach virus." As to be expected, he had a lot to say about Mayweather's trash-talking.
