WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0-1, 29KOs) confirmed BoxingScene.com's report from Friday night, that a deal was reached to defend his title against former three-time world champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39KOs). Alvarez-Mosley will be the co-featured contest on the Floyd Mayweather-Miguel Cotto pay-per-view on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"Lately things have not gone so well for Mosley, but he'll come with everything. He has a lot of of experience, he's strong, he knows how to move, and we have to remember how he hurt Mayweather. Personally, I think he's an opponent who will do a lot for me," Alvarez said.
"When the negotiations with Mayweather fell through, we were told that Mosley would be the first option above the others, but it seems the negotiations [to make the Mosley fight] were difficult and we were always kept waiting, I'm happy it's done. Mosley is the name that we were looking for. He failed against Mayweather, but I think Shane still commands a lot of respect, he's well traveled, continues to be dangerous, but I have youth and that is my advantage and that will pull me through. I shall triumph in this fight and enter the big leagues of boxing."
Canelo, who headlined his last five ring appearances, has no issue with being involved in a co-featured position to Mayweather-Cotto.
"We will be on a large stage. Mayweather did not want to fight me, but we are excited to be on this very important card," Alvarez said.
