"I'm not happy with my performance today," stated newly-crowned WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, who just defeated former champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. via slit decision at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Despite the fact that one judge surprisingly scored the bout 115-112 in favor of Vazquez, Donaire dominated the majority of the action. Nevertheless, the 4-division world champion wasn't completely pleased with his performance, even though he dropped Vazquez late in the fight and had him buzzed a couple of other times.
"They're definitely more tougher than expected, you know. I thought my power was going to be able to take them down. I just couldn't find the rhythm. You know, maybe I was caught up with all the controversy that went on before," Donaire explained as he talked about what it was like fighting at the higher weight. "But you know what? I gave all my heart, but definitely the bigger guys are tougher than expected."
While he may have said that the bigger guys are tougher, it certainly didn't seem like it. Donaire showed little respect for the punching power of Vazquez. On several occasions, he walked right to Vazquez with his hands down at his side, daring the presumed bigger man to hit him with his best shot. It was Donaire's first fight in the 122-pound division. At no time did he appear as though he was in any real danger, even when Vazquez landed his own flush shots. Donaire may not have been impressed with his performance, but he definitely looked like he's going to be a force to be reckoned with in the division.
