After defeating Ramos, Rigondeaux said on the ShoBox telecast that he wanted to face Nonito Donaire. The Filipino Flash faces Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on February 4th for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title. When I asked Rigondeaux if Donaire is the fight that he wants the most he responded by saying - "I would love to fight Donaire. That is the fight I want. The promoters just have to come to an agreement and they are working towards making that fight happen."
Both fighters are promoted by Top Rank (Rigondeaux is also co-promoted by Caribe Promotions) so theoretically the fight could happen. BoxingScene recently ran a story by Ryan Maquinana in which Donaire's trainer Robert Garcia dismissed Rigondeaux as a possible opponent for Donaire. Garcia feels that there are bigger names out there that would make more sense for Donaire to fight. The Cuban feels that Garcia is just making excuses in order to avoid making the fight happen.
"They are just going around in circles. I want the fight but it looks like they don't want the fight. Stop the excuses and lets just make the fight," stated Rigondeaux. "I am the champ at 122 pounds. Nonito says he doesn't know me but he should know me. I am the champ in the division," he continued.
Rigondeaux said that regardless of who he fights next that he planned on getting back in the ring soon. The Miami, FL based fighter only fought once in 2011 and plans on being more active this year.
"We are looking at two or three months before I get back in the ring. We are looking at facing the biggest names out there," Rigondeaux told The Boxing Lab.
