MARTINEZ: «THE ONLY THING I’M THINKING ABOUT IS MACKLIN»

26 Jan 2012 22:04       hits 2688 Print version

"It will be a great fight. I need eight weeks of training, which I just started, so I cannot tell you what I predict because I need to see how I do in the eight weeks...the only thing I'm thinking about is Macklin and I will not think about anybody else at this moment. I want to respect Macklin because he is a great fighter, and I need to train properly for that fight...I'm doing the same thing Macklin is doing for me, watching film, studying, and looking for mistakes where I can take advantage," stated middleweight king Sergio Martinez, who made it clear that he's focused on the fight in front of him, a March 17 clash with Matthew Macklin. Check out what else he had to say!

MJ: Hey Sergio, how is your training going for your St. Patrick's Day fight against Matthew Macklin?

SM: Excellent; always perfect.

MJ: Can you tell us a little bit about your opponent and how you feel this fight will go?

SM: It will be a great fight. I need eight weeks of training, which I just started, so I cannot tell you what I predict because I need to see how I do in the eight weeks.

MJ: I know over the last few weeks, there has been plenty going on with the WBC and HBO regarding the Chavez Jr. fight. Can you tell us the latest?

SM: What happened with HBO and the WBC is normal and customary in the boxing world. You look for a solution and everything will finish fine. You can never give up.

MJ: So are you still waiting in line for Chavez or are you through with the WBC?

SM: At this moment, the only thing I'm thinking about is Macklin and I will not think about anybody else at this moment. I want to respect Macklin because he is a great fighter, and I need to train properly for that fight.

MJ: We're actually starting to hear a little buzz about people wanting to fight you. Andre Ward said he was possibly interested in fighting you down the road, and Robert Guerrero just told me that he would fight you.

SM: I admire Guerrero; he's the real deal. I am happy to hear that from Guerrero because I feel he is a real warrior.

MJ: Guerrero says he walks around at about 152 and would be happy to meet you at 150.

SM: No way I'll fight Guerrero at 150. I will go to 150 for the BIG fight [vs. Mayweather].

MJ: So Guerrero would have to go to 154?

SM: At least 155.

MJ: What about Andre Ward?

SM: He's another great fighter that I'd love to fight, but right now, I'm only thinking about March 17, however, I'd meet him at 164 for it. I'm only talking right now, but at the end of the day, the only focus and the respect is for Matthew Macklin.

MJ: Absolutely. Have you watched film on Macklin? How do you feel going into that fight as far as preparation?

SM: I'm doing the same thing Macklin is doing for me, watching film, studying, and looking for mistakes where I can take advantage. I'm doing my job like I'm supposed to do.

MJ: What do you think about all the drama going on with Mayweather and Pacquiao?

SM: It's like a soap opera, but it's never finished. I believe the public is getting tired already, as well as every one of us. I will accept Mayweather's challenge at 150 to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. I would love to fight Mayweather at 150 at the end of the year. At this moment though, what I really want is to take care of business on March 17, and then everything will come down to being Mayweather or Chavez. I've said yesterday, today, and I'll say tomorrow that the only real champion that will fight Sergio Martinez is Floyd Mayweather.

MJ: Is there anything else you'd like to tell your fans at FightHype?

SM: I want to be sure that all my fans are watching HBO and coming to Madison Square Garden, because it will be a great show. I will show how, in every fight, I improve more.
