Victor Ortiz Won’t Be Bothered By PED Process in Camp

10 Jan 2012 22:57       hits 2158 Print version

Victor Ortiz has no problem with submitting random blood and urine samples during training camp.

The former WBC welterweight champion admits it took some getting used to last summer, but he has grown accustomed to the process now that he is in the middle of his second straight camp that required random submissions.

“They take your blood and you use the bathroom quite a bit,” Ortiz said. “The only different thing was like when there were people looking at you using the bathroom. It was kind of like, ‘All right.’ I had to get used to it, because it was kind of like, ‘I’m trying to concentrate, but he’s looking at me.’ I’d be talking to him sometimes. ‘Yeah man, so how’s it going?’ ”

After adhering to random, Olympic-style testing before his fourth-round knockout loss to undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Sept. 17 in Las Vegas, Ortiz didn’t hesitate when representatives for Andre Berto demanded the same precautions prior to their Feb. 11 rematch in Las Vegas.

“Not at all,” Ortiz said. “Not at all. Yeah, no problem. We have nothing to hide and neither does Berto, so that’s good.”

Berto did offend Ortiz when he insinuated on Twitter following his loss to Ortiz that Ortiz benefitted from performance-enhancing drugs during their thoroughly entertaining slugfest. Berto backed off those comments later, but the damage was done as far as Ortiz is concerned.

“I didn’t really feel like I did my best that night,” Ortiz said. “But then to turn around and get blamed for usage of illegal enhancement drugs, that was uncalled for because I don’t do any of that stuff.”

The 24-year-old Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif., overcame two knockdowns during his first fight against the 28-year-old Berto (28-1, 22 KOs), of Winter Haven, Fla., to win a unanimous decision in an unforgettable brawl April 16 at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. MGM Grand is the site of their rematch, which will be televised by Showtime.
