EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: BUDDY MCGIRT

27 Mar 2006 11:51       hits 5260 Print version

JA: I know that you were at the Hopkins-Tarver press conference earlier in the day. I know before when I spoke with you, you didn’t want to comment on the fight until the fight was finalized. Now that the fight has been finalized, can I have your comments on the fight?

"I think that this fight is a great fight for boxing. Bernard is a great champion, he is a great warrior. I don’t think that he is going to take a fight that he doesn’t think he can win. We are going to be prepared for the best Bernard Hopkins possible on June 10th."

JA: A lot of people that I talk to feel that all this fight is about is the money. Do you feel that way?

BM: No not at all.

JA: Will you be looking at Bernard’s fights against Jermain Taylor?

BM: No I won’t be looking at his fights against Jermain Taylor; I felt that Bernard beat Jermain in the first fight. I have my tapes that I am going to be watching and I will go from their.

JA: Is it Bernard Hopkins a “What you see is what you get” type of fighter?

BM: Bernard is very tricky and has ways of setting you up and we need to be prepared for them. When he does those things in the fight I need to have Antonio be ready and make the proper adjustments.

JA: Bernard is going to be 41 years old going into the fight, do you think that his age is going to have a big impact on him at all?

BM: I am not worrying about his age I am pretty much worrying about his last two fights. I am more worried about what he is going to try to do in his camp.

JA: How is Antonio feeling?

BM: He is great. Antonio is in great spirits. He has another chance to fight another great fighter in Bernard Hopkins.

JA: Lamon Brewster is almost a week away from his fight. How is Lamon looking in camp?

BM: Lamon is looking great. Training camp has been great and right now it’s just a matter of maintaining till next week.

JA: If you look at all the Heavyweight champions in the world, do you think that Lamon is the best one out of all of them?

BM: Right now I think he is because there is no one out there, the division is wide open and ready to be taken over.

JA: When you started training Lamon, was he set as a fighter or did you have to tweak a few things with him?

BM: He has so much ability that he hasn’t used yet, the key is to make him understand that he can do more than walk into a punch, he can be aggressive and be slick, he has that ability. Lamon doesn’t realize how good he is, once Lamon realizes how good he is the Heavyweight division is in real trouble.

JA: Do you expect him to come out of April 1st with a win?

BM: Oh yeah most definitely.

JA: Arturo Gatti is fighting Carlos Baldomir, what do you expect out of that fight?

BM: Carlos Baldomir is a tough guy, he proved himself against Zab Judah. We need to get Arturo in the best shape, have a couple of game plans down pat and we will be ready.

JA: When is Antonio’s training camp going to begin?

BM: Next week.

JA: When is Lamon’s camp going to be over?

BM: We leave Monday too go to Cleveland.

JA: When is Arturo’s camp going to begin?

BM: 2 weeks.

JA: Floyd Mayweather is going to be fighting Zab Judah. Can I have your thoughts on that fight?

BM: Great fight but I think Floyd is on the top of his game right now and its going to be tough to beat him.

JA: Is there anything that you would like to say in closing to the fans on Boxingtalk.com?

BM: I would like to thank all the fans for all the support over the years. Thank you and God bless you all.

Q&A: Buddy McGirt!

Why on earth didn't Eddie throw more punches? He had no problem landing his right hand... he had more speed than Povetkin... and he was in better condition. The fight was his to take, but he wouldn't pull the trigger. What happened? You know, I don't know how to answer that question. I've been asking myself the same questions over and over again read more ...
