Diaz stops Freitas to win unification bout

WBA lightweight champion Juan Diaz added the WBO belt to his collection Saturday night when Acelino Freitas' corner stopped their title unification fight at the end of the eighth round. Diaz improved to 32-0, winning his second world title at the age of 23 with the dominating performance against Freitas (38-2), a four-time world champion. Acelino Freitas snd Juan Diaz, the WBO and WBA lightweight champions, respectively, addressed the media and each other at Thursday's final news conference for their title unification fight at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT, before meeting each other in the ring to unify their titles. Freitas edges Raheem!

Former world champion Acelino Freitas (38-1, 32 KOs) won back his former WBO lightweight belt with a twelve round split decision over Zahir Raheem (27-2, 16 KOs) on Saturday night at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Freitas got off to a good start, but Raheem was able to turn the tables in the middle rounds as the pace slowed. Brazilian boxing star Acelino "Popó" Freitas (37-1, 32 KOs) told the Brazilian Boxing Confederation that he will fight Zahir Raheem (27-1, 16 KOs) on April 29 in the United States. Corrales vs Freitas next?

Looks like WBC/WBO lightweight champion Diego Corrales will next face Aeclino Freitas in a rematch of their August 2004 bout won by Corrales. Freitas promoter Art Pelullo is excercising the second of two options he held on Corrales to force the Freitas rematch happen according to ESPN. There is no guarantee that Corrales would still have both belts under that scenario, as the WBC is pushing for an immediate rematch between Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo. read more ...
