Margarito-Clottey Presser!

11 Oct 2006 17:29       hits 5390 Print version

WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (33-4, 24 KOs) calmly took the podium at Saturday's press conference at the Mandalay Bay Resort Casino in Las Vegas confidently predicting: "The Tijuana Tornado will strike again!" Assuring victory in his next bout, Margarito continued: "Everybody they put in front of me is going down!" Margarito faces Joshua Clottey (30-1, 20 KOs) on December 2 in a bout televised by SHOWTIME. Earlier this year, Floyd Mayweather declined a record $8 million dollar pay-day to face Margarito. Instead Mayweather will face Carlos Baldomir next month in another welterweight title bout. "I am crossing my fingers that Baldomir beats Mayweather and that Baldomir fights me because I know Mayweather does not want to fight me," stated Margarito. Describing his fighter as "fearsome," Margarito's promoter Bob Arum addressed the media: "I really don't blame Mayweather for not wanting to get in the ring with Margarito." Arum continued, "Mr. Pound-for-Pound ran like hell when we offered him $8 million to fight Margarito."

Flash SHOWTIME Presser Quotes

Final press conference quotes from the Copacabana in New York City for Saturday's big SHOWTIME telecast from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City: Miguel Cotto: “I know what I am doing. I know what I am capable of doing and come December 2nd, Puerto Rico will have a new champion – Miguel Cotto! At this weight, I feel that I have more strength and I am going to be more inclined to take the fight to the opponent. I started camp for this fight at 177 (lbs). I used to start (for jr welterweight bouts) at 167. I've never seen Quintana fight. My uncle saw his fight and says he's a strong fighter. I know I will need to box and I have that ability, I am not just a power hitter." read more ...

Antonio Margarito Injured While Sparring

Margarito was sparring at the South El Monte Gym when he made a shuffle to his left side and immediately limped away waving his hands for his sparring partner to stop the action. For about a minute he attempted to walk off the injury to his right leg but it wasn’t responding. The injury appeared to be just above his right ankle. It wasn’t swollen but could be a serious sprain based on my observation read more ...
